RIO Boot Camp

Description and Rationale

While the longest-serving RIOs have been on the job for 15 years or more, there has never been an effort to professionalize the RIO's role or to establish best-practices and SOPs for RIOs to use in the performance of their duties. The persons best equipped to lead that effort are RIOs themselves. The Boot Camp is, therefore, built on the model of peer to peer education, taking advantage of the experience of the first generation of RIOs and the Scientist-Investigators from the Division of Investigative Oversight of the Office of Research Integrity as facilitators. The Boot Camp is comprised mainly of facilitated discussions and hands-on exercises, including role-playing, on critical aspects of the RIO's role in handling allegations of research misconduct.

Goals and Objectives

The Boot Camp will provide a forum for RIOs and their legal counsel to discuss critical skills RIOs need to accomplish their roles and the most important problems facing RIOs today. Through written exercises and role-playing, RIOs will be able to practice key aspects of their role in handling allegations of misconduct. The Boot Camp will provide instruction of advanced forensic techniques used by ORI to detect fabricated or falsified images and numbers.
